Question: |
How does the PS3 mod-chip work? |
Answer: |
Currently all modification types work only on a PS3 with system software version 3.55 or below. A higher firmware version will have to be downgraded first.
There are 2 different types:
a) Using a jailbreak device. THIS METHOD IS OUT DATED AND NO LONGER INSTALLED BY US.
b) Custom Firmware. This is a replacement firmware, similar to the official Sony one, but allows back up games and homebrew software to be run. Currently games can only be copied to and played from the PS3 hard drive. |

How does one dump games on the Hard Drive? |
The installed back-up manager (Multiman / Rogeroe) can do that for you from an original game disc. This method is used for both the custom firmware and the jailbreak device. Currently game discs can not be dumped using a computer BD-Rom. |

Will I loose my guarantee if I have the Mod-Chip installed? |
If the PS3 is on firmware v3.55 or below then no. If it has to be downgraded then yes as the PS3 needs to be opened. |

What is the Custom Firmware? |
It is a customised version of the official Sony firmware release, but with extra features like loading games or homebrew applications from hard drive.. |

Can PSN Network (Online) still be accessed wit a custom firmware? |
No. When PSN is accessed it checks the PS3s system software version and will not allow the PS3 to connect until the latest version is installed. There are firmware spoofing utilities that will trick PSN into believing that the PS3 is on a higher firmware version but they are normally rendered useless very quickly with later system software updates. |

What if a system software update is done? |
Doing a system software update will erase the custom firmware making it impossible to reinstall it without downgrading the PS3 system software to v3.55 first. |
